Naming Conventions

Delegated OU Names

  • Delegated OUs are named with a 3-4 character abbreviation of the name of the Department or College that requested the OU.

  • Child OUs within a delegated OU do not need to conform to any naming convention.

User Account Names

Most user accounts are created automatically during the NetID creation process.  However, there are some exceptions; a specific naming convention is required to prevent these manually created accounts from being overwritten by automatically created accounts.

  • Enterprise Administrators:

__ea<netid>

  • Exchange Administrators

__exa<netid>
  • Delegated OU Administrators:

__a<netid>

  • Child Domain Administrators:

__cda<netid>

  • Service Accounts:

__<dept./college abbreviation>-<service account name>

Computer Account Names

Computer accounts are created as servers and workstations are joined to the domain.  In order to prevent duplication of host names all computer account names must be prefaced with the name of the delegated OU followed by a dash (-) and ending with the desired computer name (i.e. UITS-Server1)

Group Account Names

While UITS will provide access to a number of automatically created and maintained security groups, most security groups are created by the OU administrators.  All group account names must be prefaced with the name of the delegated OU followed by a dash (-) and ending with the desired group name (i.e. UITS-IISWebAdmins)

Group Policy Object Names

The ability to create group policy objects is delegated to all Delegated OU Administrators.  In order to establish ownership of a GPO and prevent duplicate names all GPO names must be prefaced with the name of the delegated OU followed by a dash (-) and ending with the desired GPO name (i.e. UITS-workstsations_baseline)
