Roaming profiles are a popular method of
ensuring that a user’s desktop experience is the same regardless of
which computer they log into. Typically a user will have only one
roaming profile and it is configured using the “Profile Path” field on
the Profile tab of the user account property sheet. However, because
directly editing a user account object is not permitted in ‘CatNet and
because it is possible for ‘CatNet users to need more than a single
profile the following method must be used to provide roaming profiles
for ‘CatNet users.
|
-
Create a group
policy object (GPO) in the ‘CatNet domain
(be sure to follow the
‘CatNet
Naming Convention)
|
-
Go to the User
Configuration\Windows Settings\Folder
Redirection area.
|
-
Go to properties on each of the folders
you have the option to redirect (On Windows XP: Application
Data, Desktop, My Documents, and Start Menu or
on Windows Vista: AppData(roaming), Desktop,
Start Menu, Documents, Pictures, Music,
Videos, Favorites, Contacts, Downloads,
Links, Searches, Saved Games) and
choose either Basic – Redirect everyone’s folder
to the same location (if all of your users
profiles will be stored in the same location) or
Advanced – Specify locations for various user
groups (if all of your users profiles will not
be stored in the same location)
-
If you selected the basic
option configure the Target folder location
to create a folder for each user under the
root path and then specify the root path for
users’ folders.
-
If you selected the advanced option add the
group(s) you want the policy to apply to and
configure the Target folder location as
described above for each group you add.
|
-
Set the Scope of
your GPO to apply the settings only to the
group(s) containing your ‘CatNet users
(remove Authenticated Users from the list)
and link the GPO to the OU (or OUs)
containing the computer objects that you
want your users to get their roaming
profiles on.
|
-
In order for the
User Configuration portion of a GPO to apply
when users log onto specific computers the
Local Computer Policy on each computer must
be modified. Apply this local policy to all
the computers in the OU(s) you linked your
domain GPO to:
