'CatNet – Enterprise Active Directory Domain Services

Services: Current

UITS is committed to providing the following services to 'CatNet members:

  • Support for the hardware, security, redundancy, and backup for the domain controller machines that run the ‘CatNet forest.

  • Delegated management for OU Administrators

  • Integration with the campus NetID directory service which automatically creates the active directory accounts for faculty, staff, students and departmental sponsored visitors that allow NetID authentication at the desktop.

  • Microsoft Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) assistance

  • Easier computer resource management through group policy and the establishment of minimum security requirements.  The ‘CatNet service provides templates and advice on security GPOs.

  • Forum or Listserv for discussion of Active Directory and Active Directory security issues.

  • Presentations about the ‘CatNet service and related topics.

  • Notice of important changes and scheduled maintenance through an administrators contact list.

  • Central logging of events on ‘CatNet Domain Controllers and Member Servers hosting central resources.

  • A service calendar which lists important events.

  • A repository for tested and approved administrative scripts and utilities.

  • A FAQ page to help administrators find a quick solution to common problems.

  • Emergency and ad hoc backup administrator support to cover vacations, staffing shortages, disaster recovery, or similar situations.

  • DDNS and Reverse Lookup

Services: Potential Future

UITS is planning to provide the following services in the future:

  • Integrated calendaring, e-mail and instant messaging services

  • Automatic group creation and maintenance based on data gathered from institutional systems (i.e. PSOS, SIS, and UIS)

  • Support for roaming profiles and remote home directories; greatly simplifying backups and user data recovery.

  • CIFS storage space

  • Document collaboration services

  • Support for user and machine certificates via a ‘CatNet PKI service

  • Remote software installation.
